An Extreme High Temperature Event in Coastal East Antarctica Associated With an Atmospheric River and Record Summer Downslope Winds

High surface temperatures are important in Antarctica because of their role ice melt and sea level rise. We investigate a high temperature event December 1989 that gave record coastal East between 60° 100°E. The were associated with pool warm lower tropospheric air anomalies >14°C developed two stages over the Amery Ice Shelf. First, there was near-record poleward advection within an atmospheric river. Second, synoptically driven downslope flow from interior reached unprecedented strength large area, leading to strong descent further warming region. easterly winds unusually deep strong, advected westwards, giving short period at locations, including 9.3°C Mawson, second highest its 66-year record.
